An “Oversize” Sturgeon or Trophy Sturgeon is any Sturgeon that exceeds the maximum keeper measurement.
These giants average about 8 feet in length but often grow to well over 14 feet in length and can weigh up to 500 pounds. They are very acrobatic, and when hooked it is typical to experience the fish leap out of the water. This is big game fishing at its finest. The average battle can last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour depending on the angler and the size of the fish. Oversize Sturgeon are released but the battle is the fun and the Columbia River is the place to catch large White Sturgeon.
The peak time to fish for these giant sturgeon are from mid May through October. In May the trophy sturgeon come up out of the salt water and are heading up to the gravel bars below Bonneville Dam located on the Columbia River, to spawn.
Often while you’re fishing for sturgeon, most fishermen will be fishing for salmon, so the fishing pressure is low. My group clients like this time because it provides excellent business trips for employees and associates. Your clients and associates will love a day fishing.
